Psalm 27: 1-3 (NRSVA)

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me
    to devour my flesh—
my adversaries and foes—
    they shall stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war rise up against me,
    yet I will be confident.

I like to think that God has a really big comfy armchair. I don’t know if God is in the kind of place that needs armchairs but I think God would have one anyway. A place to rest, to relax. Somewhere that people can snuggle up with God and talk about things, or even not talk about things. A place to make people feel safe and welcome.

That is where I will be spending my Hogmanay. In a comfy place where I can think about the year that has passed and make plans for the year which will come.

Where will you be? At a party? A ceilidh? With friends, family or strangers? With telly or a good book?

Wherever you find yourself I hope you feel the comfort and protection of God’s-everywhere-armchair. I hope you know you don’t have to be afraid of what has been and that God is there — armchair ready —for all that will come.

Prayer:

Dear God of protection

Thank you that you are with us whatever day it is

Help us to let go of the things which have made us afraid

Stand with us as we face the new year ahead

Celebrate and commiserate with us in your loving way

Amen
