Acts 2: 19-21 (NRSVA)

19 And I will show portents in the heaven above
    and signs on the earth below,
        blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
        before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

In the passage Peter reminds those who are listening that God speaks in the language of signs. Len Sweet at the Sanctuary First Re-Imaging Church Conference gave us all a short master class in semiotics. Sweet reminded us all that the language of signs and pictures are in fact the spoken currency of 21st century people, regardless of their age. He then went on to encourage us to see and understand that signs and symbols are all part of our biblical heritage. Learning to read the signs is all part of the work of the Holy Spirit in the life and understanding of the believer.

At the heart of our faith is the sign of broken bread leading us into unbroken fellowship and healing with God. And wine that speaks to us of the new wine of the coming Kingdom. God’s amazing grace poured out that we might be brought into abundant life.

As we seek to live out yesterday’s reflection encouraging us to travel in expectation, let us today look out for the signs of the Kingdom in our midst. I believe they can be found everywhere if we are prepared to see them.

That we might be for them
