Psalm 139: 1-12 (NRSVA)

1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from far away.
3 You search out my path and my lying down,
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
    O Lord, you know it completely.
5 You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is so high that I cannot attain it.

7 Where can I go from your spirit?
    Or where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
    if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning
    and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me fast.
11 If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and the light around me become night’,
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is as bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

I can hear my mother telling us as children to be patient, as we demanded her attention. “I can’t be everywhere children, at the same time.” Yet that is exactly what we are all trying to do. We try to be everywhere at the same time and we fail. There she was hanging out the washing, trying to prepare lunch, while at the same time getting herself ready to go out to work. While we wanted her sole attention.

The writer of Proverbs reminds us that the eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch over the good and the evil. God is indeed closer than we may ever imagine. He can do what a mother can’t. He can be everywhere at the same time.

In Acts 17: 27 Paul reminds the Athenians that God has made us with a desire to reach out and find him. God truly wants to give us his full attention. And Jesus in Matthew 18:20 says simply where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am among them. To be omnipresent is a God ability. Perhaps that is where we should leave it.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus

Here we are gathered together

Holding screens

Holding hands across the internet

Reading words

Hearing prayers being read

Praying together

Come be among us now

Fulfil your promise

Speak into our text messages

And our prayers

Come be the centre of our thoughts

Open our ears that we might hear your word

Open our eyes that we might see the need

Open the door that we might walk through

Come walk with us into the world

We are ready to follow you If you will lead.
