Jeremiah 29: 7 (NRSVA)

7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

I have lived in Glasgow now for around 20 months. I’m a country girl at heart so it has been a struggle getting used to city living. Twenty months down the line I’m still not a fan. I don’t like how built-up the city is. I don’t like the noise, the litter, or the car fumes in the air. I crave space and clean fresh air.

But there are places of beauty within the city. One such place is the park across from my house and it has become my haven. It is so beautiful, filled to the gunnels with trees, flowers, plants, birds and quite a few squirrels. In parts of the park, surrounded by greenery you can hardly hear the traffic. It is a wee, tranquil, life-giving oasis of peace. And I know it isn’t a haven just for me. This park is alive with life. It is alive with families playing together, dog walkers, friends walking together, sun seekers lying on the grass soaking up the waves. What a blessing!

PRAYER:

Lord God,

Bless our cities.

They are hubs of life.

Help us to see the beauty within our cities

And to care for the shared spaces that fill us with joy and revive our hope.

Amen
