Recounting the splendour
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 145:1-5, 17-21 (NRSVA)
1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you,
and praise your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.4 One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.
Worship begins in wonder. It is the act of remembering out loud, of tracing God’s touch through the story of our lives and the life of the world. The psalmist leads us into this rhythm with, ‘I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.’
To recount the splendour of God’s majesty is more than just speaking about it, it is being shaped by it. Each act of praise, each sung phrase of thanksgiving, turns our attention outward and upward. In singing of God’s splendour, we learn what goodness looks like, what mercy feels like, what love sounds like. When we praise, when we dwell in wonder, our hearts begin to take the shape of what we recount:
‘The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.’
We become more just and more kind, for the One we praise is just and kind.
To think about:
What words of praise shape your understanding of God most deeply?
How does worship guide and form you?
Can you remember a time when meditating on God’s goodness changed the way you saw the world?
Prayer: (To the tune of ‘Amazing Grace’)
O Lord, our King, how great your name,
your mercy has no end;
each dawn we lift our hearts again,
on you our hopes depend.
Your splendour fills the earth and sky,
your wonders never cease;
you shape our souls as we draw nigh,
and fill our minds with peace.
Teach us to praise with humble hearts,
to live the songs we sing;
that justice, kindness, truth, and grace
may in our living ring.
So may our worship form our ways,
our thoughts, our work, our days;
till every breath and every sound
becomes a song of praise.
Amen
