It’s like a scene from a great movie! The goodies are brought in before the baddies, the corrupt Council, and accused of disobeying orders and trying to pin the blame, wrongly, on the High Priest and his cronies. Even now, even after the glory of Easter, even after the glorious message of resurrection is spreading all over the place, the Pharisees still couldn’t see it, couldn’t even glimpse it, they were blind to the living Lord Jesus. Annoyingly to viewers of the movie, the baddies are still trying to squirm out of responsibility. But this story is not about blame, it is about the Good News that brings life, it is about the Good News so ingrained in the hearts of Jesus’ followers that they can do nothing but disobey the Council and obey their Lord, for he lives and nothing will ever be the same again!
Lord Jesus, help us to be bold, to be strong — for we know you are with us. You are the light that shines in the darkness and the darkness has never, and will never, put it out. When we find ourselves up against it or downhearted when all seems to be going against us, lift our eyes and our hearts, help us to walk and talk with you along life’s narrow way. And when we are accused of being Christians, by your grace may there be enough evidence to convict us. Amen.
27 They brought the apostles in, made them stand before the Council, and the High Priest questioned them. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this man,” he said; “but see what you have done! You have spread your teaching all over Jerusalem, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”
