Scene: At the bus stop

Listen to this daily worship
Matthew 9: 10-11 (NIVUK)
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
A man at the bus stop tells you he saw Jesus yesterday.
“I saw Jesus yesterday.
On the back of the bus
eating highly processed food
wrapped in single use plastic
tapping his feet
to the tinny music
blasting out of someone’s phone.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he was slouching
chewing with his mouth open
joking with friends and strangers
and laughing too loud.
I saw Jesus the other day
he was getting emotional,
getting personal,
getting political,
getting too deep,
getting too spiritual,
having too much fun.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he was wearing polyester.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and his grammar was atrocious.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he was listening to awful derivative autotuned pop music.
I saw Jesus yesterday.
And the slogan on his t-shirt was uncalled for.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he sounded so old fashioned.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he sounded too new fangled.
I saw Jesus yesterday
and he was in the wrong place
talking to the wrong people
wearing the wrong things
eating the wrong things
and talking about the wrong things.
I saw Jesus yesterday.
And then Jesus saw me.
And everything changed.”
Prayer:
Dear Jesus
Help us to see you
help us to notice you
help us to lay down our preconceptions
to go on the adventure
that is loving you
and being loved by you.
Amen.
