The Water Cycle
Listen to this daily worship
John 7: 37-38 (NIV-UK)
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’
Most children are fascinated by the notion of the water cycle, when they learn of it. Even as an adult I am often astonished by the way that water can take so many forms in its endless dance of evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation and runoff/infiltration. It’s no wonder it makes such a fantastic metaphor.
One feature of the water cycle which struck me in the context of Jesus’ words today is how the amount of water remains essentially the same even as it changes state and location.
As I pictured Jesus at the festival, projecting his offer and God’s welcome, I thought about how God’s love is just as constant even as it changes state and location. Jesus didn’t come to offer more love, a love which God had somehow held back until then. God’s love for humanity was, is and always will be constant, never-ending. But Jesus was and is able to show us what that love looks and feels like in different forms and locations.
We can’t add more of God’s love to the world, any more than we can take that love away. But a believing heart can help God’s love be seen and recognised — sharing droplets of grace, building blocks of justice, creating pools of peace and reconciliation.
Let all who are thirsty, come, and let those who believe, drink.
Prayer:
Living water,
With you, we warm, we rise
We condense, we fall,
We flow, we soak in
We begin again.
We believe.
Amen.
