Precious blood!
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 72: 10-14 (NIVUK)
10
May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores
bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba and Seba
present him with gifts.11
May all kings bow down to him
and all nations serve him.12
For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.13
He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.14
He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.
The very blood in our veins is a gift.
The gifts of God and our mothers are circulating around our body right now!
They are doing incredible quiet work, calling forth wonders, just beneath our skin.
Vivd, red, fast, containing miracles and multitudes…
In one drop of blood there are three to five million red blood cells bearing oxygen from our lungs through each stitch of our bodies. These scalloped pearls have little curves on each side to maximise their surface area so they can absorb and yield as much oxygen as possible. Hold a shell to your ear and hear their song of this treasure in motion, never hoarded, but bounteous in a high crested ocean.
In one drop of blood there are ten to twenty thousand white blood cells combating infection and disease. That’s in a healthy person. When someone is ill the number increases as more are called as reinforcements to the ramparts. The phagocyte hearthguard relentlessly engulf pathogens. Meanwhile their lymphocyte huscarls herd the pathogens together, binding them to one another to face the phagocyte fury.
In one drop of blood there are several hundred thousand platelets ready to scab and keep out infection. It’s an intricate microscopic emergency response team ready to patch and weave and stem the flow. In each of their efforts they buy precious time.
It’s all swept by in plasma the roaring river that makes up over half of that drop upon which everything else flows. Hormones, glucose, salts, and enzymes and carbon dioxide are also carried on the current. Heat as well. This river regulates our body temperature, carrying life and warmth.
Each drop of blood is a compressed world of heroism and bravery, glittering wonder and perilous escape, craftsmanship and sacrifice.
Each drop of that blood is precious in God’s eyes.
Prayer:
Dear God,
We thank you for the wonder of your gifts
microscopic and miraculous.
Help us to treat the blood in our veins
and the blood of others
as the precious gift it is.
Amen.
