1Colossians 2: 4-10 (NIVUK)

4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ.

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

The Christian gospel is big. The whole of God is present in Christ, in his body. That’s huge. The incarnation is awesome and calls us to continual celebration. It puts God at ground level, on the road Christ walked, and now on the road we walk because the Spirit of Christ dwells in us.

Paul tells us not to let any false teaching divert us from this basic thought, which is also a direction of life, how we walk. How we think and how we live become joined up in us as they are in Christ. The one question which will always help us to sort out what is true and what is false is ‘who is Christ?’ And as we marvel at the double answer, he is God and he is man, we will begin to think of everything on our walk in this double way, giving proper space to the human aspect and proper space to the divine aspect. And, rooted and built up in Christ, we shall abound in thanksgiving, as Paul put in verse 7.

PRAY

God our Father, this week you have given us room to receive your word, to eat and drink the good news, to be amazed at all you have made, to sing over your good purposes, to rejoice with those who return to you, to celebrate the mystery of a triune Creator. May we walk on as those who are always grateful that Christ walks with us, as those who discover the Spirit guiding us, as those clothed with goodness and shod with the gospel – giving praise and thanks to you, now and always, Amen.
