Romans 6: 1-4 (NIVUK)

1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

I had a brilliant coat when I was little. It was a grey puffer, and I wore it absolutely everywhere. Over time, it started to get a bit small. It was also getting a bit grubby. Crunch time had come! I really struggled to give it up, even when given a lovely new one. I don’t know if there were tears, but I definitely dug my heels in. In the end my poor mother, exasperated, agreed to let me turn it into some sort of strange stuffed whale. I remember taking it to bed for a while, but I think I eventually relented and it was discreetly removed.

We have the most incredible invitation: new life in Jesus Christ! That exchange – new for old, beating hearts for stony centres – is, supremely, here. Why would we make any other choice?

Our once-and-for-all-time perfect Sacrifice, with whom by water and the Spirit we are buried and raised, to newness of life. The work is already done, friends!

So what will we do? The old simply doesn’t fit. Jesus has changed everything. Transformed, completed, made whole. New and improved.

Prayer:

Father
Thank You for Jesus! Thank You that in His death and resurrection I too am raised to newness of life, now and always. The work is done, the exchange has been completed. When I fall and fail, because I will fall and fail, remind me of this. You set my feet on stable ground and I am made new. Keep me close to You, always in the joy of Your salvation.
Amen
