Proverbs 2: 1-9 (NIV-UK)

1

My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,

2

turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding –

3

indeed, if you call out for insight
    and cry aloud for understanding,

4

and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,

5

then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.

6

For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

7

He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose way of life is blameless,

8

for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

9

Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair – every good path.

What is it that you want out of life? What do you dream about doing or accomplishing?  Do you have a passion to be the best you can at something? What would you treasure if you found it or were given it?

Proverbs tells us that our passion in life should be to seek wisdom, to receive it, and to cherish it. Wisdom is like a rare, hidden treasure that is worth our absolute best effort to find, as hard as miners search for precious silver. It requires serious searching, tuning our ears to uncover it. It is not simply given as a matter of course. First it is sought, unearthed, quarried.

God doesn’t put the biscuits on the lowest shelf. You have to look for them. Those who seek find, said Jesus. If we pursue wisdom, then God will grant us wisdom. Who else could tell us reliably about ourselves and how to live in this world? Only God who made us, who established the moral order of the world. It is from Him that we learn how to live wisely. And so we must make every effort to hear Him.

Take a moment today to seek God’s wisdom for your path in life. Do you need a course correction in your daily decision making? God is ready and willing to give His wisdom to you when you seek and are willing to receive.

Every good path starts with understanding goodness and integrity — God’s kind of wisdom. The Lord gives us wisdom to order the paths of our lives for our protection and blessing. His gift of wisdom is a treasure that cannot be purchased. It must be sought after, and valued. When God sees us doing that, He generously gives it to us, revealing His path before us.

Prayer:

Lord God, I ask you to reveal the path I should follow in my life. Direct me to Your wisdom in my daily decisions. Help me to trust Your wise guidance towards a Christ-centred life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
