Psalm 14 (NIVUK)

Fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’
    They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
    to see if there are any who are wise,
    who seek after God.

They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;
    there is no one who does good,
    no, not one.

Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
    who eat up my people as they eat bread,
    and do not call upon the Lord?

There they shall be in great terror,
    for God is with the company of the righteous.

You would confound the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.

O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
    When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
    Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

God what do you see when you look at us?

We are told you see us not just as individuals in need of love but also as a whole, in our societies, and with all our follies. You have been watching us for so long, seeing us making the same mistakes over and over again, never learning our lessons. Do you weep God? I am sure that you do.

But God I know you have promised to stand with the broken and the poor. I know your heart lies with the downtrodden and the cheated. I pity those who torment others, those who think themselves better. I myself have been guilty of this in my own small ways, and I know that in these moments God you have looked at me with sorrow. Help me, help all of us please, to bring our hearts fully into your light. Teach us to stand side by side with you and in doing so to stand with the poor, downtrodden, cheated and broken.

Give us hearts for change, give us seeds to grow a new society. New seeds where old repeated mistakes will finally be pulled up like weeds from around us. Where those whose hearts are stone will be covered like ivy covers a crumbling house and find they see the world differently at last.

Help us to grow into this endeavour God, do not let us forget.

Amen
