Ecclesiastes 1: 14 (NIVUK)

14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Man: So here we are. All this will be yours one day. This one was my first, I bought it after I made my first million. Ambition, I called her. I used to get out on the water a lot then. I’d put in a full day’s work, then take her out in the evening. Your mother was keen in those days too so we’d maybe take her down the coast on the weekend. She wasn’t big enough for clients though. That’s when I bought Success. A much more impressive vessel, see? Although she doesn’t look like much compared to the next three. I used her mostly for business, of course. Your mother didn’t really have much time for sailing by then. Nor did I, quite frankly, but business was booming, so I really needed a bigger boat. By that time it was a bit of an investment, buying boats, and there was always something newer and better. Of course, I had to hire crew.

This is the one I make the most money out of. Windchaser she is called. Four decks, top-of-the line technology, every luxury you can imagine.

What’s that? No, I’ve never sailed her myself. Don’t see the point really. The water’s awfully crowded these days and..Sell her? I suppose I could, but then again I don’t really need the money. Yes, yes I suppose you might sell her yourself when the time comes. Hopefully not too soon, right?

Well, let’s head back up to car and…(notices a ramshackle boat tucked behind the others) See, what did I tell you about the water being too crowded these days? Someone’s moored their old wreck right beside Windchaser. I wonder who… No, it couldn’t be, could it? (Sighs out) Oh, well I’ll be…, I’d quite forgotten her. Back when I was a student, before I could afford a proper boat. She was all I could get. I’m not sure she even had a name.

[As they walk off, the camera shows the tattered name Enough on the side of the hull].

Prayer:

Lord

When something is good, why do we assume that more is better?

More things, more time, more love, more wisdom.

Perhaps it is enough just to be

In the wind, in the sun,

In the one precious life we have been given.

Amen
