Luke 12: 16-21 (NIVUK)

16 And he told them this parable: ‘The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, “What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.”

18 ‘Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’”

20 ‘But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”

21 ‘This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich towards God.’

An architect TV presenter has been designing an enormous extension for an old farmhouse.

(Presenter to camera) “This is the longest construction project we’ve followed, first interviewing Gwen and Simon way back in Series 1. Here in Series 17, Gwen and Simon have completed their 25 garages, or should I say Gwen has, Simon passed away in series 16 and now it’s Gwen and her 25 garages for all Simon’s classic cars.”

[Cut to Gwen and the presenter in one of the garages]

Gwen: “The thing is, I don’t even drive. I suppose I’ll have to sell them. Although they do remind me of Simon, so it’s kind of nice to see them around the place. I thought about saving a few for the grandkids, but they are in Australia now.”

[Presenter looking at cars], “Wow, is that a 2000 Impreza Turbo?”

Gwen, “I guess so. It’s a pretty colour isn’t it?”

Presenter: “And a 1990 BMW E30 325i!”

Gwen: “I never liked going out in that one. Simon always insisted on having the top down and it made a right mess of my hair”

Presenter (tearing himself away from his admiration of the cars) “If you do sell the cars what will you do with the garages?”

Gwen: “Well, I do collect teapots…”

[They both look doubtfully at the vast space around them]

Gwen (comfortingly) “Never mind, you did a grand job. Be a shame to pull it all down. Maybe somebody else could use them. I’ve been volunteering at the Foodbank since Simon died…”

[Gwen and the presenter exit into the next garage and can be heard discussing alternative uses for the cars and the space]

Prayer:

Generous, forgiving, loving Lord

How foolish it is, to know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Teach us to value the things that matter

To build the things that last

To share what we have, while we can,

Whether that is little or much

In Jesus’ name

Amen
