Luke 11: 5-13 (NIVUK)

5 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, “Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.” 7 And suppose the one inside answers, “Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.” 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

9 ‘So I say to you: ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 ‘Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’

Jesus tells a story that’s meant to feel uncomfortable — someone banging on a door at midnight, asking for something. It’s not for themselves, but for an unexpected house guest. The request is met with grumbling. But still, the door opens. Not because of friendship, but because of persistence.

Then Jesus reveals the heart of it. If even a reluctant friend responds, how much more will your Father in heaven? And not just with basic provision like bread, but with the Holy Spirit, with life itself. So, go ahead and ask!

‘Here’s what I’m saying:

Ask and you’ll get;

Seek and you’ll find;

Knock and the door will open.

Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in.’ (The Message Bible, verses 9-11)

Imagine this. You knock on a door, unsure if anyone will answer. Instead of silence or suspicion, the door swings open. You’re welcomed in, handed a warm drink, drawn into conversation. What you feared might be rejection becomes shared life. Simple, generous, unearned.

Prayer:

Generous God,

you don’t turn me away when I knock.

You open the door wide,

with welcome, with warmth,

with yourself.

Teach me to ask without fear,

to seek without shame,

to knock with hope.

And when others come to me,

help me open the door gladly.

Amen

What can I do? Offer to help someone with a small task, such as walking their dog, carrying shopping, showing them how to use a new technology, or help them learn how to bake.
