Acts 2: 1-4 (NIVUK)

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

“We were all in that room praying together when suddenly there was an almighty shaking and what sounded like an explosion from heaven. In confusion we stopped praying, what was happening? Was there an earthquake?

Then abruptly my breath was taken away when a powerful, raging wind swirled around us, engulfing not just the room but the whole house.

I looked around for help but all I saw was fear and bewilderment in my brothers’ eyes. Disorientated, I saw fire sweep around the room. But it wasn’t hot. It was weird. Then the fire started to split into what can only be described as… tongues… tongues of fire.

These tongues spread out across the room until each one landed upon each of the brothers. All of a sudden I was filled with an overwhelming sense of peace and realised that one of these tongues had come to rest upon me. I knew then that this was the work of the Lord.

I called out to my brothers to tell them not to worry that this was the work of the Lord but it wasn’t my voice that came out because I was speaking another language. And it wasn’t just me, all of my brothers were speaking other languages.

Trembling in amazement we asked ourselves what had just happened? What is this miraculous gift the Lord has given us?”

Prayer:

Holy Spirit

Fall afresh on me today

Give me courage to endure the shaking

And help me to surrender my need for control.

Give me the wonder of a child to be able to see you at work in my life

And to accept the gifts you bestow.

Amen
