Psalm 118: 21-29 (NIVUK)
21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;
you have become my salvation.22 The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
23 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 The Lord has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad.25 Lord, save us!
Lord, grant us success!26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
From the house of the Lord we bless you.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has made his light shine on us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession
up to the horns of the altar.28 You are my God, and I will praise you;
you are my God, and I will exalt you.29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures for ever.
There are days when everything feels like no man’s land — divided, uncertain, stuck. But Psalm 118 reminds us that today is not just any day. Today is the day God has made. Not by accident. Not as a test. A gift.
One of the quiet miracles of games, crafts, and hobbies is their power to anchor us in this moment, not in regrets about yesterday, or worries about tomorrow. It could be playing golf, or chess, perhaps singing, or cross-stitching, these all invite us into God’s presence, here and now. They become more than recreation - they become re-creation, and God delights in this!
The world often seems to be heading towards division, distraction, and despair, and we need spaces where joy can bubble up. The joy of doing something simply because it makes our hearts sing. The psalmist calls this rejoicing. God calls it holy.
Imagine this. Someone chalks hopscotch squares on broken concrete. A child laughs. Two classmates who had kept their distance now pick up bats and a tennis ball. There is no ‘them and us’ — just this moment, this game.
Prayer:
Lord of this day,
still my restless mind.
Let me find you
in laughter,
in play,
in every small delight
that holds me here
present,
grateful,
alive.
Amen
