Psalm 138 (NIVUK)

1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
    before the ‘gods’ I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down towards your holy temple
    and will praise your name
    for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
    that it surpasses your fame.
3 When I called, you answered me;
    you greatly emboldened me.

4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord,
    when they hear what you have decreed.
5 May they sing of the ways of the Lord,
    for the glory of the Lord is great.

6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;
    though lofty, he sees them from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes;
    with your right hand you save me.
8 The Lord will vindicate me;
    your love, Lord, endures for ever –
    do not abandon the works of your hands.

Sometimes our passions and pastimes go quiet, not because we’ve lost interest, but because life has simply become too heavy. Grief dulls the colours. Worry crowds out the rhythm. There’s no space left to play.

Psalm 138 speaks into that. It is a song of someone who has walked through trouble and found that God never let go of them. The ground hadn’t disappeared under them after all. And because love held them fast, their soul found strength again.

That kind of steady, unflinching forever-love is the ground on which all safe play is possible. It is what makes it all right to take risks, try new things, laugh again. When we know we are not alone, not abandoned, we can come back to life.

So, if your hobby has been gathering dust, or your joy feels like it belongs to someone else now, take heart. God’s love does not expire or grow distant when things fall apart. It endures. It waits. And it will meet you right where you are, brush in hand, ball at your feet, story ready to be told.

Imagine this. A board game sits forgotten in the corner of a room once filled with noise. One day, someone lifts the lid, smooths out the pieces. A friend notices, joins. Laughter takes a moment to return — but then, like a long-missed song, it does.

Prayer:

Faithful God,

when the days are dark

and joy feels far away,

remind me that your love endures —

a steady hand

that never lets go.

You do not rush me,

you do not tire of me,

you stay.

Give me courage

to pick up old joys again,

to try without fear,

to laugh without apology.

Let your unflinching forever-love be the ground under my feet,

firm enough to dance on

Amen
