Luke 12: 13-15 (NIVUK)

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’

14 Jesus replied, ‘Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?’ 15 Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’

Each brother has a solicitor beside him. One is whispering in his solicitor’s ear.

Solicitor 1: “My client emphatically rejects your client’s inadequate offer. As brothers they are surely entitled to an equal share.”

[brother 2 speaks into his solicitor’s ear)

Solicitor 2: “This may be so, but my client points out that their mother chose to leave everything to him”

[brother 1 speaks again angrily to his solicitor, who clearly rephrases his words more diplomatically]

Solicitor 1: “My client suggests that your client may have used undue influence.”

[brother 2 whispers angrily]

Solicitor 2: “My client points out that yours hasn’t been near their mother for three years.”

[more angry whispering]

Solicitor 1: “My client believes your client may have had something to do with that.”

[“My client/my client” goes back and forth accompanied by angry whispering, which builds to a crescendo]

My client…

My client…

My client….

My client…

Mine

Mine

MINE!

Prayer:

God, please stop

Stop our greed

Stop our hostility

Stop our demands

Stop us.

That we might start again.

Amen
