Philippians 4: 4-7 (NIVUK)

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Athletes and performers sometimes talk about being ‘in the zone’ — a flow state where focus is effortless, distractions disappear, and everything lines up. They’re fully present, fully alive, tuned in and responsive. Paul’s words feel like an invitation to this sort of space — a spiritual flow state.

The Message Bible translates verse 4 as, ‘Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him!’

Don’t try to force joy, revel in it. Let it bubble up. Let your joy be as full-bodied and energising as a runner’s rhythm or a musician lost in their music. Paul doesn’t deny that worry exists, but he refuses to give it the last word. He says, ‘Instead of worrying, pray. Let your petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.’ There is something almost athletic about this, a kind of muscle memory for the soul, training ourselves to turn anxiety into connection, tension into trust.

Imagine this. You’re holding something heavy, a bag full of worries you’ve carried all day. You step into a space filled with music, laughter, and light. Someone invites you to put the bag down. You do. Your hands are free, your shoulders drop, your breath deepens. You begin to move again, not with fear, but with joy. You’ve found your rhythm. You’re in the flow.

Prayer:

God of joy,

you invite me to live fully,

to revel in you every day,

to turn my worries into prayer

and my restlessness into trust.

Help me find my rhythm in you.

When I feel spread thin, settle me.

When I am anxious, draw me back to peace.

Teach me to find joy in your presence,

to be present, grounded, flowing with your Spirit.

Amen
