Songs creating hiding places for people…—
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 32: 1-7 (NIV)
1 Blessed is the one
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the one
whose sin the Lord does not count against them
and in whose spirit is no deceit.3 When I kept silent,
my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night
your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.6 Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
will not reach them.
7 You are my hiding place;
you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Sometimes we need to hide away in order to protect ourselves from the shame and the embarrassment of our actions. The psalmist here reflects on the dangers of trying to sweep our guilt under the carpet. He suggests that we need a healthy approach, we need to confess our wrongdoing and seek forgiveness.
Being a songwriter has helped me over the years express the profound sorrow and angst that I have witnessed in lives that have become the casualties of betrayal and unacknowledged guilt. The truth is we can never move on unless we at least acknowledge before God and ourselves our need to forgive and to receive forgiveness.
This is not an easy topic to cover in a few lines, but it is an issue that has to be dealt with if we ever want to be healed from the mistakes of our past. A few years back Iain Jamieson and I wrote a song about the tension and struggle that exists with cover-ups. This is truly a current song about singing redemption. You can listen on Spotify here.
Let’s use the lyrics of this song as a prayer today, it was originally written between two people — a couple speaking to one another — but it in a strange way it can be used as a prayer to God.
Forgiveness
All the hidden secrets buried in my heart
If you really knew me it would tear me apart
Would you really love me if I took the blame
I’m walkin’ on eggshells trying to speak your name
Chorus:
There was something special about our love
How the years have twisted and abused love
But I’m ready to begin
Do you think that we could start again
Feel the Spirit breaking in
Forgiveness, forgiveness is the way
Don’t you leave it till there’s nothing left
Don’t you turn your face away
Forgiveness, forgiveness is the way
Your angry silence lingers in the air
There’s nobody living in our living room
In the empty spaces let us build a home
Life is for living not for being alone
There was something special about out love
Did I catch you smiling at my turn around
The circle’s completed we’re on holy ground
And if rings are worn and faith is too
Let the joy of forgiveness bind me and you
