Psalm 113 (NIV)

1. Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, you his servants;

praise the name of the Lord.

2 Let the name of the Lord be praised,

both now and forevermore.

3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,

the name of the Lord is to be praised.

4 The Lord is exalted over all the nations,

his glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like the Lord our God,

the One who sits enthroned on high,

6 who stoops down to look

on the heavens and the earth?

7 He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

8 he seats them with princes,

with the princes of his people.

9 He settles the childless woman in her home

as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

There are times when I think, ‘What is the point?’
Why should I/we keep working for peace and justice?
The warmongers and arms-dealers will win in the end,
for what are my prayers in the face of bullets and missiles?

Yet there are times when I, like Job,
catch sight of something greater out of the corner of my eye,
so awesomely vast that I struggle to comprehend what I am seeing.
For the God of all the universe,
the God born among us,
the God placed in a cow’s breakfast,
that God has never forsaken us.
We are not alone in our endeavours:
we are always accompanied,
by the God of love who reaches down to pick us up,
offering us joy and hope
in the midst of everything.

In those moments, are the reminders
that peace and justice is the bedrock of our world:
we are not fighting against creation
but joining in her groaning calls.
Thanks be to God!

AMEN.
