Ephesians 4: 1-7 (NIVUK)

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

Knotsmith is the nearest word I can find that comes close to describing someone who loves knots, and is expert in tying and, crucially, releasing them. Knots hold much of our world together in all their myriad forms from the tiniest stitch that joins two blood vessels, to the mightiest rope that moors an ocean liner. Whether it’s silk, thread, wool, string, rope or wire, the knotting methods are similar, and are quite literally in the hands of the knotsmith.

There is no doubting the diversity of the human race and of the Christian Church. This is to be celebrated. We are knit together in strength not because of what we are made of, or what we think, or don’t think; but because of the Knotsmith who binds us to each other in just the right ways: not too tight, not too loose. This is what holds us together in Christian unity.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, invisible seamstress, binding us to each other with golden yarn and the finest purple cloth.

Holy Sprit, weaver of life, binding us to each other in criss-cross ways as part of an unseen pattern.

Holy Spirit, master Knotsmith, binding us to each other: strong as iron, soft as silk.

I pray that I might be pliable, yet firm; delicate yet unyielding; one strand yet entwined.

Amen.
