Acts 1: 12-14 (NIVUK)

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

‘They all joined together constantly in prayer…’

When were you last at a wild prayer meeting? When were you wild with excitement at what God might do next? When were you on tiptoe of expectation wondering when the mysterious gift of the Holy Spirit might come on us?

When those first disciples met to wait for the promised Holy Spirit, they did not know she would arrive six weeks after Easter, so that they could plan their Pentecost celebrations well in advance.

It was all promise and no fulfilment – as yet! All they had were the promises of Jesus that something else was coming – known by name, but unknown by experience. How long are we willing to wait in that prayer room? Or do we settle for the predictability of the liturgical calendar, have our Pentecost birthday parties, and move on unchanged?

Prayer:

This hour of prayer is yours, Lord.

That feels too long.

These ten minutes are yours, Lord.

That feels too short.

This moment, Lord, is yours.

That feels right.

This breathed moment, Lord.

This breathed moment, Lord,

This breathed moment, Lord,

One breath at a time.

Waiting, watching,

Waiting for the unpredictable Holy Spirit. AMEN
