Psalm 17: 1-9 (NRSVA)

1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
    give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2 From you let my vindication come;
    let your eyes see the right.

3 If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
    if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
    my mouth does not transgress.
4 As for what others do, by the word of your lips
    I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5 My steps have held fast to your paths;
    my feet have not slipped.

6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    incline your ear to me, hear my words.
7 Wondrously show your steadfast love,
    O saviour of those who seek refuge
    from their adversaries at your right hand.

8 Guard me as the apple of the eye;
    hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9 from the wicked who despoil me,
    my deadly enemies who surround me.

Earlier this week I spoke about my Grandad. Today I’ll share a wee bit about my Granny. My Granny was my best friend in life. I could always tell her anything. And while she would always listen to me without judgment she was plain speaking. If something was nonsense she told you! If she thought you needed to know something, she told you! My Granny would never say something that wasn’t true just to make me feel better. There was no sugarcoating with my Granny! I’ve always, therefore, had an appreciation for directness and honesty.

In our relationship with Father God we need directness and honesty. We can lay before our Father God our full selves. Our loving Father does not condemn us but he does encourage us to see the truth of a situation, to view our lives with honesty and integrity, gently calling us to lay aside that which is not serving us or that which is not true to our core values.

And in being our full selves with the Lord there is both honesty and joy.

PRAYER:

Father God,

Give us the courage to be honest with ourselves and you today.

Give us courage to speak loving truth to those who need to hear it

Help us as we live with integrity to be an encouragement to others.

Amen
