We Can Begin Again

We Can Begin Again

In the midst of so much despair which is evidenced across the world, Obama, last night, in a speech to the Democratic Party returned to the theme that inspired millions across the world when he first talked and wrote about the ‘audacity of hope’.

He was echoing the message he gave to the American people during his election campaign in 2008. It is a theme that never goes out of date - hope invites us to look beyond the present and see in the everyday things of life something that is bigger and better than what we can simply see with our eyes. Hope invites us to see with our hearts.  Hope invites us to believe in the power and significance of forgiveness.

I found myself, as he was speaking, thinking about the passage of scripture found in the Hebrew poetic literature of Lamentations,

“Yet hope returns when I remember this one thing: The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. The Lord is all I have, and so in him I put my hope.” (Lamentations 3:21-24 GNT)

The prophet Jeremiah, speaking to the Hebrew people at time when their world had crumbled, appeals to his people to hang in and never give up because each new day brings with it the endless possibilities of hope.

When all is lost and there seems to be no way forward, hope invades our sadness and disappointment, quietly whispers in our ears  -  ‘we can begin again.’
