Love is never self-seeking

Listen to this daily worship

1 Corinthians 13:5, Philippians 2: 3-4 (NIVUK)

(1 Corinthians 13) 5 It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

(Philippians 2) 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Now why does ‘self-seeking’ make me think of politicians? I’d better not go there. There are, to be sure, many who really do want to do some good in the world, and work hard to improve the lives of their constituents, but they don’t make headlines.

There are so many situations where a little encouragement, a little help, a little kindness, a little consideration, would make a huge difference to a huge number of people. But money, power, and the influence to acquire them, are so tempting, and soon people can become blinded to the needs of others.

The pandemic has highlighted the quiet, unseen, unsung, poorly rewarded work of many. This is real love, never mind the boasters and the profiteers.

PRAYER:

God of love,

God of the love which seeks the other’s good,

at whatever expense,

teach us to love ourselves and others,

giving proper respect and worth to all your people.
