End of Summer

1Corinthians 13: 6-13

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Today sees the end of the summer and the beginning autumn. If you look carefully you might just see a hint of autumn in the trees and a little chill in the air. How quickly time flies. Its seems like yesterday we were extolling the joy and exuberance of summer.

We have been thinking and praying about sport and the arts and what lessons we can learn from the beauty of an artistic performance or the dedication and commitment of sports men and women.

Now we find ourselves being invited to consider the changing environment that autumn brings. The golden mellow sunlight of an autumn morning, or the rainy dismal wind swept landscape of autumn storm. All of these experiences remind us that nothing in this life stays the same. It is only the things born out of love and selflessness that will last into eternity.

Lord,

Thank you for all that is past

The days of joy and encouragement

May I never forget

Those who have made me laugh

Those who have taken time to understand

Those who have been and still are loyal friends

Those who have supported from a distance

Those who have prayed and lived the gospel

Give me the grace and the courage

To move into a new place

To make new friendships

To rediscover importance of fruitfulness

Shelter me from the stormy days arrive

Hold me in the palm of your hand

Let the morning light

Lift me into your presence

Remind me that it is only the selfless acts of love

That will stand the test of time
