John Chalmers on Christmas Round the World #DailyWorship

We thank Jo Penn and the Scargill Community for their Daily Worship week and we welcome Very Rev Dr John Chalmers a former Moderator and former Principal Clerk to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He currently serves as Convener of its World Mission Council and he has asked some members of the council and others to help write some of these Christmas thoughts inspired by life in other parts of the world.

Revd Stephanie Couvela on Christmas Pressure #Blog

Read our new guest blog from Revd Stephanie Couvela of Keele University about Christmas pressure: "Christmas was a slightly brittle time when I was growing up. My Mum started planning the whole thing in about September, a slightly desperate attempt to create a “perfect family moment” when we would all be gathered round the tree with glowing faces and happy smiles. The difficulty was that we simply weren’t that kind of family – have you ever noticed that the more functional a family is, the less hard they have to try to appear functional?"

Read our latest blog from James Cathcart: "Christmas comes with a lot of pressure and expectation, not least of all from my stomach… But if we are able to take a moment to reacquaint ourselves with the story of Christmas - of God’s journey to our world as a vulnerable refugee with a message of hope - there’s an invitation to enter the mystery, the celebration, the wonder… at our own pace."

New Year theme material for January online

New Year theme material for January online

Our theme for the New Year ‘Re-Imagining Church’ taking the theme from our January conference is online now and covers 30 December - 02 February. We will be exploring ways of renewing, revitalising, and restarting ‘church’ beyond boundaries and outwith walls. What is church anyway? Why do we do it?

Over five weeks we will wrestle with questions of what it means to be and do church in 2019. We will consider where we can celebrate tradition and where we can champion new emerging practices...

This Advent our theme is Christmas Round the World exploring the various traditions that bring us together across oceans, across languages, and across time. Group discussion questions adapting the material for small groups are now available Discussion Questions. How can the story of Christmas - of God’s journey to our world as a vulnerable refugee with a message of hope - inspire us in new ways to address inequality, conflict and suffering in our world?
