Wherever the river goes

I was recently invited to participate in a blessing of the River Don for the local Angling Association. I learned a good bit about local fish and other river creatures while preparing. Rivers are extraordinary things. Arteries of life which connect land and sea. No wonder they make such a good metaphor.

In the frozen heights the melt begins

What was fixed, stony, harsh,

begins to loosen, to shimmer, to flow.

Unfreeze our hearts, Lord

Fill us with your life-giving,

love-finding vitality

That we might feel

the transformation all around us,

the transformation within us,

as the freshness of the Spirit washes all our debris away.

Ezekiel 47: 9

9 Wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish, once these waters reach there. It will become fresh; and everything will live where the river goes.
