Seeking God’s Face

Sister Ilia Delio tells us: “The world is created as a means of God’s self-revelation so that, like a mirror or footprint, it might lead us to love and praise the Creator. We are created to read the book of creation so that we may know the Author of Life.” St Augustine, too, saw the world as a place where the revelation of God might be found. If we take that seriously, God is found all around us, revealing himself in our neighbours, our friends, in the events around us. In acts of kindness we see the smiling face of God. But he also reveals himself in acts of cruelty and violence; there we see God weep. If mission is, as Rowan Williams puts it, “Finding out what God is doing and joining in” then we can join in with God in our communities, rejoicing when he rejoices and weeping where he weeps.

Loving Father,

smiling, rejoicing Father,

compassionate, weeping Father,

we seek your face.

We seek your face where you may be found;

in your house; our sanctuaries and cathedrals.

In our communities;

in the giggle of an infant,

the hand-clasp of lovers,

the random act of kindness between strangers.

But also, in the sigh of the exhausted parent,

the weeping of the homeless,

the fear of the vulnerable elderly.

Help us to see you wherever you may be found

and join wholeheartedly

with the work of your kingdom

here on earth.

Amen.

Psalm 27: 4-5, 8

4 One thing I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord,
    and to inquire in his temple.

5 For he will hide me in his shelter
    in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
    he will set me high on a rock.

8 ‘Come,’ my heart says, ‘seek his face!’
    Your face, Lord, do I seek.

Lent Discipline

WEEK 3: Every morning this week we invite you to say this short prayer. You might want to say it before going out the front door: Dear God, help me today to see my neighbourhood through your eyes, with your love, compassion and kindness. Help me to seek your face in those around me. Amen.
