Today’s psalm shows us the very precious relationship God has with this world. He is a King dwelling in unimaginable greatness, but He is also the one who is “great in Zion”, acting and pouring out life for the benefit of this small planet.
I love the technology that puts together some of our TV programmes like Planet Earth. I find myself wide eyed and sometimes wide mouthed at the stunning complexities of some of the creatures in the world that no-one gets to see! Oceans, mountains and jungles are particular favourites of mine – hidden places abundant with unknown creatures. I sometimes see the wonder of a few of those discovered and displayed on screen and ask out loud “Why?” Why go to all that bother for something that is never seen! And yet the psalmist describes our God’s very greatness as it compels Him to dwell amongst us and reflect His Glory in our planet too.
Our spiritual pathway, our Christian life, is not ascetic. Most of us are not required to down tools and live a solitary lifestyle. We are called to impact our world, to live out our life in the Spirit amongst the communities where we live and work. We aren’t asked to ‘bring God into our community’, for we will find He has been there a lot longer than we have! We simply “Call on His Name…” and He answers.
Where is His Name needed in your community today?
Lord our God, We are calling upon your name today, You are Holy.
God-Who-Forgives, Forgive us our sins, Empower us to forgive those who sin against us.
Great and Almighty God, Deliver us from evil, And may we dwell under the shadow of your wing.
God of Justice, Bring hope and equality to those who live in fear, May their oppression be our hearts’ cry.
King of my heart
Be King of this world.
1 The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2 The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name.
Holy is he!
4 Mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Extol the Lord our God;
worship at his footstool.
Holy is he!
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
They cried to the Lord, and he answered them.
7 He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
they kept his decrees,
and the statutes that he gave them.
8 O Lord our God, you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
9 Extol the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
for the Lord our God is holy.
