Keeping the faith

After narrowly escaping the anger of the people of Nazareth, Jesus said, ”A prophet is not without honour except in his own town.” Others before and since who have proclaimed God’s word have experienced this anger. Jeremiah felt cut off from the land of the living, when his people wanted to destroy him and erase his memory. Martin Luther King Jr. was gunned down in Memphis, because he had a dream of peace and harmony among all people.

The truth is seldom popular, when that truth threatens to shake us out of our comfort zone and see the world in new ways.  Yet, if we will embrace the message, then we have the promise that “the truth shall set you free”. Like the prophets of every age, let us never give up the struggle for truth, peace, and freedom.

Lord God, bless me with faith and perseverance, so that I may never be shaken in the midst of obstacles which would frustrate your truth. Let my heart remain steadfast, trusting in you at all times, my eyes fixed on your vision for a world of harmony, stability, and mutual respect. Amen.

Jeremiah 11: 9, 18-20

9 And the Lord said to me: Conspiracy exists among the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

18 It was the Lord who made it known to me, and I knew;
    then you showed me their evil deeds.
19 But I was like a gentle lamb
    led to the slaughter.
And I did not know it was against me
    that they devised schemes, saying,
‘Let us destroy the tree with its fruit,
    let us cut him off from the land of the living,
    so that his name will no longer be remembered!’
20 But you, O Lord of hosts, who judge righteously,
    who try the heart and the mind,
let me see your retribution upon them,
    for to you I have committed my cause.
