Friendship with God’s Creation

“Muddying the waters” is an apt simile for the pollution of land and sea with chemicals that make drinking water unsafe for humans, and oceans unsafe for marine creatures. From plastic to landmines we have a poor track record of keeping the planet healthy. Big oil companies say they support the Paris agreement on climate change, but ExxonMobil (The Economist, Feb 9-15 2019) plans to pump 25% more oil and gas in 2025 than in 2017. Multiple interventions are now needed.

Friendship is part of the potential of our DNA. It is in our lifeblood as the immanence of God who continually sustains and develops creation. We are placed as the image of God in the cosmic temple of creation, to look after the world.

Prayer:

Lord, help us out of friendship for the natural world to live simply and wisely, to be kind to our children and grandchildren, and to tackle the hard work of political change, for your name’s sake, Amen.

Ezekiel 34: 18

18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture? When you drink of clear water, must you foul the rest with your feet?
