Big difference

Matthew 13:31-32

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.
32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

‘The smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.’

It reminds me of the phrase ‘From little acorns, great oaks grow!’ never underestimate the big difference that small things can make …

Think of today,

What #smallthings have made a big difference?

It might be a word of encouragement, a smile, a gesture, an act of kindness,

But what has encouraged you today? Share it using the hashtag #smallthings

And use it as a moment of thankfulness for the blessings that God gives to us – no matter how small!

Father God,

Thank you,

For autumn sunshine,

For wind, for rain!

For the colours of the trees,

For family, no matter how noisy and chaotic,

For friends to share the journey with, no matter how demanding,

For hugs,

For smiles,

For hands held,

For eyes to see,

For ears to hear,

For lungs to breathe,

For a body that moves with ease (most of the time),

For health,

For water,

For a roof over our head.

How easy it is to forget your care,

To focus only on the difficulties in life,

To become disheartened and lose faith,

To lose sight of your kingdom,

And yet a simple task of listing the small things we have to give thanks for reveals many, many blessings,

Thank you!

Thank you for those and for many others,

And most of all, for the love and new life that you offer us through your son,

Renew us and inspire us

And encourage us that through the small things we do with great love that we can make a big and lasting difference and that together our many small things can grow the great big thing of your kingdom here on earth.

Amen.
